Money, Money Money……C’ome on ya all know you heard that song in your head.

Money…. “It makes the world go round;” it’s the root of all evil; “A penny saved is a penny earned;”  “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”

We have all heard these sayings, but why am I talking about money on a homesteading blog?  Good question.  Ya all know that one of our goals here at Chosen Weeds,  is to become as self-sufficient as possible.  We do lots of things to accomplish this, including hanging clothes to dry outside, growing our own food (produce and meat), learning about foraging and medical herbs, eating healthy, making our own cleaners, collecting rain water, reusing as many items as we can, etc.

There is one thing that we don’t talk much about, though, and that is money.  We have to think about creative ways to bring in income, especially when the economy is bad.  Both my partner and I are self-employed.  I clean houses and he has an IT and media business.  We also sell veggies, eggs, ducklings/chicks, kids (no not the human kind), and 100% goat milk soaps.

There are, of course, multiple ways to have a side hustle, but one thing is for sure, we all need to begin to understand our money supply and how the economy works.

We all know that our money doesn’t go as far as it used to, but here are a few quick facts about the US dollar.

  1. First of all, what is money? Money is a medium of exchange that facilitates trade in goods and services. People seek money because it has purchasing power; and part of this purchasing power is generated by the people’s demand for money. To learn more about the value of money, go HERE
  2. Next, we have to understand what kind of money we use now. The US dollar, and all currencies distributed by any country, is called fiat money.  This money is legal tender because the government says so.
  3. Where does the “value” money come from? The “value” is derived purely from the people who have confidence in their currency and keep using it as a method of exchange.
  4. Did you know that, all the major banks in the world are owned and controlled by the banking families? They control the entire process of the creation, the printing, and supply of money around the world. The three biggest bank names are the Rothschilds; Rockefellers and Morgans, they ultimately own or control all the banks in the world, together with a small number of other powerful banking families, like Carnegie, Harriman, Schiff, and Warburg.
  5. As it stands today, there is not enough money in the world to pay off all the debt in the world, because of interest. This is exactly the situation the banksters wanted to create. A situation that gives them complete control over property and other assets that can be repossessed by the banks only to re-sell it to another naive person who will most likely end up in the same debt situation.”

The banking and money system is complex, and it really feels as if it is out of our control and we have no other options.  But what if there are other options? Options that don’t involve central banks and billionaires controlling our money supply?  What if you could be in FULL control of your money?  What if you could “carry” your money everywhere and have access to it at a touch of button with only an internet connection.  Imagine being able to send money to another country or person for pennies and without the hassle of exchange rates or 3rd parties intervening? What about currency that will be there even if the economy collapses?

Well, thanks to some innovative and brave people leading the charge, there are other options.

Have you heard of Bitcoin?  Litecoin? Ethereum?  These are all types of cryptocurrencies and they are literally changing the face of banking.

Honestly, I don’t know a lot about cryptocurrencies.  I have read an article here and there and have become intrigued but haven’t done a full on study of blockchain.  But it is high time I do, because there is going to come a time when our paper dollars will no longer be usable and we all need to be prepared.  We have to decide if this system of currency is right for us.

So where to even start?

R.L. Bryer, has written a book called, Blockchain: Project Renaissance, that helps introduce us into the an alternative form of currency that looks to solve the many problems that fiat money and centralized banking creates.

Bryer takes a no nonsense approach to introducing us to why cryptocurrency can change the banking game.

Although, Bryer doesn’t tell us HOW it works, at least not yet anyway, I am told that edition is coming up; we get an in-depth look at WHY this is important and how it can affect each of us on an individual level.

The why is just as important as the how.  At first, I wanted to know how this all worked before I knew why it was important, and I was kind of annoyed that this first addition did not include it.  But as I let the words of the book roll around in my head, and I have chewed on it for a while, I realized the WHY needs to come first.  As a nutritionist, working with clients who are looking to create a better lifestyle for themselves, the WHY is always the first thing we talk about.   It is the impetus that kick starts something.  For us, here on the farm, it is knowing that the economy cannot sustain itself forever, and we MUST have a way generating income outside of what the government provides.  For those I coach, it can be multifaceted.  Sometimes it’s a health crisis, sometimes it’s wanting to look better.  Whatever, the WHY is, it keeps us going when the going gets tough and we lack motivation.

If you are even a little bit curious as to why cryptocurriences are important and how they can become a game change for becoming self-sufficient, I would recommend reading R.L. Bryer’s book, Blockchain: Project RenaissanceThis is a quick read, less than a day, which is good for those of us that don’t have a lot of time.  He will give you the why and wet your palate to investigate more into how it all works.
