We have all probably seen the commercial touting that a particular soap is pH balanced.
That sounds really good right?
After all, shouldn’t we have skin that is nice and balanced?
But when you stop and think about it, is it really necessary? What does having soap that is pH balanced really do for your skin?
Long story short, it’s just a gimmick; and here is why.
Our skin, the largest organ in the human body, is naturally acidic.
That’s right, acid. There is an acid mantle covering your skin that helps protect you from pathogens.
“Acid mantle?” You ask. “I have never heard of that.”
That’s ok, most people haven’t, unless you’re a science nerd like me.
Your skin is about 5.5 on the pH scale. This helps to discourage the growth of unwanted bacteria and fungi.
Commercial “soaps” remove the naturally occurring glycerin and add fillers. This strips your skin and can causes skin conditions. Your skin is actually REJECTING these detergents and chemicals by drying out. This also leaves you vulnerable to bacteria and fungus.
Gross!
When you wash your skin with real soap (like ours), not the synthetic detergent / soap (I don’t really even want to call it soap because it is not), from the store, your skin quickly adjusts back to its normal, acidic pH.
The oils and fats in our goat milk soaps help your body to stay moisturized. The naturally occurring glycerin that is made during the soap making process draws moisture back into your skin.
So if you see a commercial or read an ad about your skin needing a pH balanced soap, don’t fall for it! A lot of marketing revolves around creating a problem and then having a product that “solves” the problem that THEY created. Just because it is the same pH as your skin, doesn’t make it better for you. You should be MORE concerned about the toxic chemicals and synthetic detergents that go into commercial soaps.
So what about a soap that is advertised to being close to the pH of your skin?
All real soap (not the stuff you buy in the store) is naturally alkaline. You actually cannot create a soap with an acid pH. It won’t work.
Basically, they are lying if they say the soap is the same pH as your skin.
So don’t, just don’t…..buy the commercial detergents in the store.
Your skin will thank you in the end.
